We’ve previously went in-depth on tips for posting on Facebook for small businesses, but today the focus is going to be on how to post on Twitter. While both of these platforms are crucial for businesses wanting to connect with current and prospective customers, it’s important to know that creating posts is far different between the two. Where Facebook’s newsfeed algorithm is more selective in what’s being seen, Twitter’s is a live stream of information. As a post on Facebook can remain relevant for hours, days at a time, one single post via Twitter can be pushed away within minutes. Though as different as they may seem, Twitter can provide a very powerful platform, and here are a few tips on how to effectively utilize it for your small business.
1. Post Frequently (RETWEET! RETWEET! RETWEET!)
Whereas on Facebook it’s recommended you only post 2-3 times per week, on Twitter to be as effective as possible, posting 2-3 times per day is the way to go. With so much information constantly streaming through the social media platform, staying relevant and having a constant presence is crucial. And it doesn’t have to be your own tweets either, you can retweet other accounts as well! It’s a great way for your business and Twitter account to gain attention from those who you share their messages.
2. Use (Appropriate) Hashtags
One of the unique traits that made Twitter so different from its counterparts was the use of the hashtag (the # sign plus a word or phrase). By using a hashtag or two with a tweet, it can allow more customers to find you as they search for related products or services.
It can also be used as a strategic branding concept for your business.
But BE CAREFUL! Before adopting a certain hashtag, be sure to research it on Twitter to make sure it’s appropriate. While it may work for your company on the surface, it’s entirely possible that upon researching, it could have a totally different and inappropriate meaning. Be creative, but be smart!
3. Apply Images & GIFs
Just like with Facebook, you want to try to apply images as much as possible with your tweets as it’ll encourage users to engage and share. But another new, and unique development with Twitter has been the usage of GIFs, or essentially moving pictures. Last year alone, users on Twitter shared over 100 million GIFs! This year, with the rise in popularity, Twitter has incorporated a GIF search application in its tweet function, partnering with the popular GIF search engine Giphy. By using GIFs with your tweets it allows you to reveal a personality with your account, but to also express your emotions. It’s another great way of gaining interaction with your current, and potential customers.
With only allowing a maximum of 140 characters per post, Twitter truly forces you to be creative in how you generate your messages to your audience. By using images, GIFs and hashtags, it’ll help you along the way in finding your voice and creativity on the social media giant. And as always, HAVE FUN!
